Protecting Your Digital Legacy: Instagram

Although Instagram is under the Meta umbrella, its post-death account management options are far more minimal than Facebook’s. When a user passes away, they are limited to two possible actions for their account.

The first option is memorialization. In this case, a loved one can request here for the account to remain on Instagram with the word “Remembering” next to the person’s name on their profile. They will simply need to submit proof of death (such as the death certificate or obituary) along with information for the account it’s regarding. All existing posts, photos, and videos will remain visible, but no new content can be added or changes made. The account’s settings stay the same, no one can log in, and it will no longer appear in public spaces such as Explore or recommendations, only visible when directly searched.

The second option allows a family member to request deletion after the user’s death. Again, by providing valid proof such as an obituary or death certificate, a next of kin can have the account permanently removed.

Though limited, these options underscores the importance of planning ahead for your digital legacy to ensure profiles reflect your wishes even after you’re gone.

Blessings,
